Angels & Fallen Angels

Hi, everyone! As I began my driving shift the other evening, there were ominous clouds across the horizon in the direction we were heading. I figured it was going to be an interesting night what with the rain, lightning and thunder.
I said a little prayer for safety and this got me thinking about angels. I’m always calling on angels for help. Everyone has their own Guardian Angel, the one who looks after your soul. That little voice you hear sometimes when you’re at a crossroads or making a tough decision –some call it conscience-, that gut feeling you get about something being not quite right. Hmmm…I have to admit suddenly becoming deaf  every now and then, if you know what I mean.

And do you remember that cartoon Tom & Jerry, where Tom, the cat, would have a good angel on one shoulder and a bad angel (usually a red little devil) on the other shoulder, giving him opposite advice? Talk about the internal battles about doing the right thing or taking a pass at not doing anything, or actually doing a deed we know is not right.

A very good friend of mine who knows a lot about angels, told me that there were also angels with other purposes: white angels for peace (we knew that!), green angels for health, yellow angels for clear thinking and inspiration, orange angels for mechanical stuff and so on. I believe this speaks highly of delegation, don’t you think?

And then we have those Fallen Angels we read so much about, the really bad ones, that behave like demons but are not; and the not so bad ones that have some redeeming quality and whose soul might be saved by self-sacrifice or some quest. Sound familiar? There are so many books out there that use this premise.

What about you? Do you believe in angels? Do you have any interesting stories about them? I’d love to hear about them!

  1. I love angels. They make excellent heroes in fiction, and they're awesome to think about IRL, too:)

  2. I love angels, and I totally believe in them since they are with me all the time. Plus, I was told during a seance and some meditations that I am a fallen angel reincarnated as human, pretty cool huh? So much scope for story telling...

    1. Hi there! I believe in them as well. And a fallen angel reincarnated? Wicked cool! You're right about the story telling: endless possibilities.

  3. Wow... I was especially fascinated by your friend's take on angels, it did remind me too of hierarchy. I bet you could do something with that, though it sounds like you're thinking of it already:) Anyway, this was a gorgeous post.

  4. Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your kind words. Angels have always fascinated me too. It's a complex world, isn't it. Perhaps that's what makes it so fascinating.

  5. Love angel lore. They are so much older than humanity. Their history is wide open. I write about angles stuck between their old home and hell. They are all brothers and sister even the ones turned demon. Love stories of redemption and lost hope. Nice post.

  8. Hi Johanna. Love the blog by the way. I look forward to reading it.

There are actually at least four religions with Angelic Hierarchy. Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and Zoroastrian.

The Christian hiearchy is as follows:
Angels: The lowest of the angels, they serve in the affairs of living things and act as messengers.
Arch-angels: This has two different meanings. This particular one means the second lowest choir. While Archangel may denote the highest of all angels.
Principalities: They are the educators and guardians of the realm of earth.
Powers: They are the bearers of conscience and the keepers of history.
Virtues: Their primary duty is to supervise the movements of the heavenly bodies in order to ensure that the cosmos remains in order.
Dominions: They regulate the duties of lower angels. It is only with extreme rarity that the angelic lords make themselves physically known to humans. They are also the angels who preside over nations.
Thrones: They are living symbols of God's justice and authority, and have as one of their symbols the throne.
Cherubim: They have four conjoined wings covered with eyes, a lion's body figure, and they have ox's feet. Cherubim guard the way to the tree of life in the Garden of Eden and the throne of God.
Seraphim: They serve as the caretakers of God's throne and continuously shout praises: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. All the earth is filled with His Glory." The name Seraphim means "the burning ones." The Seraphim have six wings.

Heh, sorry if I got into a lecture. Stuff like this interests me and angels play a large part in my series so I had to do a bit of research.
